For the past couple of decades, I've been that person friends text when they or their kids need writing help.

"Can you just look at this?"

"Do you have a few minutes?"

"I'll pay you, seriously."

Resumes, cover letters, wedding toasts, landlord complaints, even dissertations—you name it. Writing help has always been my unofficial side hustle.

But college essays? That's where I found the joy.

I kept seeing the same pattern: incredibly smart kids writing incredibly forgettable essays. Not because they weren't talented, but because they were so focused on sounding impressive that they forgot to sound like themselves.

We'd sit down. I'd ask questions. They'd relax and tell me what they were actually thinking. I'd probe for more details. And boom—there was the essay.
